Is Breathing Air Necessary For Human Life?

How To Scripturally Refute This "Scientific" Fallacy

Timothy S. Morton

Be sure and read our Addendum at the end of this article for important information.

For most of the last two centuries the "scientific" community has promoted the lie that "air" (which they claim makes up the so called "atmosphere") is a requirement for human life on earth. They insist air is composed of "elements" called "oxygen" and "nitrogen" and that man must "breathe" the oxygen in the air to live. We will show in this article that the Bible says nothing of the kind and this is all a grand conspiracy, fueled by the Devil, to try and prove the Bible is not true and thwart the spreading of the gospel and the truth of God.

"Air" In The Bible

To soundly refute this unscriptural invention of man, let's look at the first mention of "air" in the Scriptures,

"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." Gen 1:26

Notice how "air" is mentioned as the dwelling or flying place of birds. There is no mention that air is required for human life and this is the very verse when God first mentions that He is going to create man!

The reader must not forget the "law of first mention" which states that the first mention of a word in the Bible defines its use throughout the rest of the Scriptures. So according to that law, "air" is defined as the dwelling place or domain of "fowls" or "birds." There is no hint in this verse that air is for anything else.

You may say, "Brother, you can't rely on only one verse to establish doctrine. Everyone knows air is necessary for physical life. Surely the Bible must say this somewhere," but you are mistaken. To prove what is presented above is the correct Scriptural view, here is a list of all 39 times "air" is found in the King James Bible. These will show that the common idea that air is necessary for life is not a Scriptural truth and actually a lie from the pits of hell!

All is clear to anyone who believes the Bible. "Air" was overwhelming created as a dwelling and flying place for birds and fowls! Anyone who says different is being used as a tool of Satan and must repent before it is too late!

Also don't miss that "air" is found 39 times in the Bible and there are 39 books in the Old Testament. Is God telling us something? You better believe it. There are no "coincidences" with God.

Nowhere in any of these verses is it stated that man breathes air, that air is actually composed of multiple "elements" including oxygen, or that air is necessary for human life! Air is overwhelmingly spoken of as a single object primarily for the benefit of birds. Men can throw dust into the air (Act 22:23), potentially "beat" the air (1Co 9:26), and speak into the air (1Cor 14:9), but that doesn't change the fact that it was essentially created as an area for birds to fly in.

Nowhere in the Scriptures is "air" connected with "life" and this fact alone should speak volumes to the reader.

Sound In The Air?

Another lie promoted by science is that air is necessary for sound to be heard. They actually claim that if it was not for the air in the atmosphere that speech is not possible and no one could hear anything! This is just another baseless claim which is really another proof of the vast conspiracy promoted by deniers of the Bible in an attempt to convince people the Bible is not true or reliable. They are trying to silence God.

Look at the verses above, again. Do you see any verse that even hints that air is required for sound to travel or speech to be heard? Of course, not. The Bible never once claims anything like this. The Lord speaks from heaven all the time. Is there air in heaven? If air was required for sound or speech to be heard, would not God tell us? On the contrary look at this verse,

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. 1Co 14:9

Paul is saying here that one who "speak(s) into the air" would be doing a vain or meaningless thing! He says if one would speak into the air it would be of no value and yet science claims one MUST speak into the air to actually be heard! These are diametrically opposed statements. Which are you going to believe Christian: science or the Bible?

Again, nowhere in the Bible is "sound," "voice," or "speaking" connected to or reliant upon "air" in any way. The contention that sound is not possible without air for it to travel through is completely and totally unscriptural. By making such an unscriptural claim "science" is trying to make God subject to His creation!

Does Air Have Pressure?

Another related fallacy is the scientific community claims is air has "pressure" or "weight." Have you ever seen anything like that in the Bible? Do you feel any pressure or weight on you when you walk around on the face of the earth? Does the air weigh on your shoulders? This is pure nonsense. The Bible says nothing about air having weight. "Air" is a place for birds to fly!

When the weatherman speaks of "atmospheric pressure" when giving the weather, a true Bible Believer will recognize the deception immediately. He knows the Bible speaks of no such thing. This is just another example of natural man tying to usurp the authority of God and his word.

What About The Wind?

Furthermore, science says "wind" is the movement of air around the globe. Where does the Bible say this? Nowhere! The actual fact is "air" is NEVER connected with "wind" in the Bible. "Wind" and "air" are not even found in the same paragraph in the King James Bible. So much for them being connected or wind being the movement of "air." The Bible says the first time "wind" is found that it is God that makes it (remember the law of first mention),

And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that [was] with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged; Gen 8:1 (See also Num 11:31; Psa 78:26, 107:25; Jer 51:1; etc.)

Wind is not a "natural" movement of air or a "natural phenomenon." It is a direct creation of God; a force He creates for His own purposes!

All is clear: science is always wrong and the Bible is always right!

What About Breath and Breathing?

At this point some may say, "Ok, Brother, you have proven the Bible does not say air is required for life or that men even breathe air, but the Bible says people do breathe, so what do they breathe?"

I am glad you asked. Let's look at the Scriptures.

The first mention of breath and breathing in the Bible is in the notable passage Genesis 2:7,

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Gen 2:7

Who is doing the breathing in the passage? It is God. What did God pass to the man, Adam, in breathing? Why it was "the breath of life." So remembering the law of first mention we clearly see that it is God that breathes and He passes on His breath to man. What is God breathing? Why, it is "life" itself. Read the passage! God's breath is found throughout the Bible (2Sa 22:16, Job 4:9, 33:4, Psa 18:15, etc), and Job plainly states that it is God's breath that gives him his very life (Job 33:4)!

So what does man breathe? He breathes life given directly from God. In fact, it is actually God doing the breathing and this breath and life passes from man to man until God takes it back. Solomon is clear on this in Ecc 3:19. He says,

For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all [is] vanity. Ecc 3:19

Man and beast have one breath that came directly from God. There is no hint that men must breathe air. Man's life does not rely on air; it relies on God Himself, the creator! God even states this again in Ezekiel where He says,

Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: Eze 37:5

Look at Dan 5:23 for another dogmatic statement,

But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven...and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified: Dan 5:23

Paul gets in on this too with,

Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; Act 17:25

How much clearer can it be? If God wanted to make it any plainer how could He do it? He is the "breath of life" man and all other things lives by. It is not some inanimate area that birds fly in!

Physical Life With No Breath?

Now let's take a look at a verse that indicates the exact opposite of what science claims with this phony idea that man breathes air and must do so to live. Look at Job 9 where Job says,

He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness. Job 9:18

Now consider this. Job says God won't allow him to "take his breath" yet he is still alive and speaking! If God will not allow or "suffer" something, who can force His hand and make Him do it? God will not allow Job to "take his breath" or breathe, yet Job was still very much alive when he spake and lived for many more years afterward (Job 42)! Job was living on the breath or life God had previously given him. He did not have to continue to "take his breath" to live!

How wonderful it is to have a Bible that corrects the fallacies of "science" "falsely so called" (1Ti 6:20) and speaks the truth. It definitively states man does not need to even "take his breath" to live and in no place states that man must breathe air to live.

That's what the Bible says. Take it or leave it!

Biblical Conclusions

Let's sum it all up now.

Like the rest of you reading this article, your author had been taught from his youth that breathing air or oxygen was necessary to sustain life, but now, thank the Lord, he has seen the truth. After months of fervent prayer and sustained study your author has come to the sound conclusion that "air" is primarily a dwelling place for birds and has nothing to do with human (or any other) life at all.

Why would one want to believe anything "science" says anyway? This is the same science that promotes evolution, insists on "global warming," denies the earth is flat or the center of the universe. These same godless scientists, along with NASA and the secular government, have conspired to try and overthrow the word of God with their "disinformation" and lies, but those of us who believe the Bible can see through all their devious schemes. We know the truth. We hope you, dear reader, can see it as well.

The article you just read with its "scriptural" conclusions is, of course, pure nonsense. It was written as a parody to help expose the heavily flawed reasoning and tactics that more and more people are using today when discussing Bible doctrine. Even though the statements found in it of what the Bible says (or doesn't say) are largely true, the article is filled with half-truths, contrived arguments, leading statements, omitted information, stilted reasoning, irrelevant material, shallow thinking, and obvious bias. It is patterned after the reasoning methods many Flat-Earth and/or Geocentric proponents use.

You author wrote this parody to help some better see the errors and flaws in this type of "Bible exegesis." (Sometimes a ludicrous comparison can enlighten people easier than just stating facts.) With the advent of the Internet and the rise of social media such as Facebook and YouTube over the last 10 years, this method of using the Bible has become more and more common and is counterproductive to finding truth. Whether knowingly or unknowingly, those who devise or promote such arguments are doing a disservice to the Bible and clouding its truths from many who might otherwise be receptive.

For instance, the current "Flat-Earth" movement is a perfect example. Its proponents use all sorts of fallacious arguments, sophistry, flawed reasoning, and half-truths (at best) to promote their claims. But if one objectively looks at their arguments, he will find they are little different from our caricature of them in the above article. Unfortunately, many still fall for them since they sound somewhat reasonable and even scriptural, and no believer wants to be considered unscriptural, does he?
